New Witrand Hospital Board to strengthen governance and community participation
The board’s role is critical in ensuring Witrand remains responsive, transparent, and aligned to the needs of patients and the community it serves.
Witrand Specialized Hospital has officially launched its new Hospital Board, a governance structure aimed at improving oversight, accountability, and community involvement in mental health care delivery.
The Board will serve as a key link between the hospital, the Department of Health, and the broader JB Marks community.
Its mandate includes overseeing hospital budgets, programmes, and projects; monitoring alignment with MEC for Health and Departmental priorities; and ensuring community needs are reflected in hospital planning and service delivery.
Key roles of the Witrand Specialized Hospital Board include:
- Providing oversight on budgets, programmes, projects, and institutional priorities.
- Supporting and participating in community health projects and partnerships.
- Acting as ambassadors and representatives of the community.
- Driving the Ideal Hospital accreditation programme and monitoring standards.
- Promoting quality patient care and customer care, including handling complaints registered through the Board Members and refer the complaint to the complaints management Committee.
- Advising on strategic human resources matters pertinent to strategic goals of the hospital.
- Involved and guiding public relations and communications priorities for the hospital.
Speaking on during the inauguration of the hospital board, Acting Witrand Hospital CEO Dr. Isaac Zigwebile Wana said the board’s role is critical in ensuring Witrand remains responsive, transparent, and aligned to the needs of patients and the community it serves.

New Witrand Specialized Hospital Board Members
The members have been nominated across key categories to ensure balanced representation from health, government, academia, community, and civil society.
The new Witrand Hospital Board Chairperson is Mr. David Charity Moalusi, and the Deputy Chairperson is Ms. Lerato Modisane.
Other members are:
- Mr. Thoriso Maseng, representative from NWU with an academic background
- Cllr. Mantwa Kasale, MMC and Chairperson of the Health Portfolio from the District Municipality
- Mr. Abey Mothobi Mokhele, Youth Representative
- Mr. Meshack Matlawe, Representative from the Disability Sector
- Ms. Rebecca Nkaki, Traditional Health Practitioner Representative
- Rev. Siphiwe Ndebele, Church and Traditional Leadership / Community Member
- Mr. Motsile Andries Mabaso, Retired Professional and Community Member with a Human Resources background.
- Mr. Itumeleng George Maphakathi, Community Member with a Legal background
- Mr. Rabodiba David Maloganye, Community Member with a financial background
- Mr. Thapelo Saane, Staff Hospital Representative.

- Mr. Ishmael Motsamai Moloi, Director: Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Health Services.
