Swift CCTV response leads to arrest of suspected thieves in Potchefstroom

The organisation said the incident highlights the important role that technology, vigilance and collaboration play in combating crime and keeping the community safe.

Two suspects were arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning, June 11 after alert CCTV operators and rapid response officers acted swiftly to recover allegedly stolen property in Potchefstroom.

According to Cachet Park CID NPC Potchefstroom, CCTV operators monitoring the Cachet Park area noticed two suspicious men carrying a gas bottle in Rissik Street at approximately 06:22.

Reaction officers were immediately dispatched to investigate and made contact with the suspects shortly afterwards.

Upon further investigation, the men were allegedly found in possession of a gas bottle, copper pipes and a pair of sneakers believed to have been stolen.

Enquiries conducted at the scene confirmed that the recovered items had reportedly been taken from a property in Rissik Street.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) responded to the scene, and both suspects were subsequently arrested. The property owner is expected to open a criminal case.

Leandro de Beer, manager of Cachet Park CID NPC Potchefstroom, commended the teamwork that led to the arrests and recovery of the stolen property.

“This incident once again demonstrates the value of proactive CCTV monitoring and the close cooperation between our CCTV operators, reaction officers and SAPS. Thanks to their swift response, the suspects were apprehended and the stolen property was recovered before it could be lost,” said De Beer.

He added that community safety remains a collective effort and encouraged residents to continue supporting crime prevention initiatives in the area.

Cachet Park CID thanked its CCTV operators, reaction officers and all role players involved for their quick response and coordinated efforts in ensuring a successful outcome.
