Rotary honours community leader for his burning passion to serve
Helping others lights a fire in Dr Kobus Roux's soul. Rotary Potchefstroom has now awarded him with the Paul Harris award for outstanding service to the community.
Fire is part of Dr Kobus Roux’s existence – it is a flame within him that has fueled his passion for serving as chairperson of the Potchefstroom Fire Protection Association for the past 22 years.
His service-oriented nature and willingness to do everything for the benefit of others are what distinguish him. Simply put, helping others lights a fire in his soul.
This dedication was honoured on Thursday, 18 June, when Dr Roux (60) received the Paul Harris Fellow Award, one of the highest honours that can be bestowed upon an individual by Rotary. The award is presented to a Rotarian or a member of the community who has made an outstanding contribution to society. It is named after the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris.

Theo van Niekerk, a Rotarian, nominated Dr Roux for the award because of the exceptional level of service and commitment he has shown to the Potchefstroom and greater North West community over more than three decades.
Past President Mignon Truter presented the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Awards to Dr Kobus Roux and Rotarian Johan Hoffman, honouring their significant contributions and commitment to the ideals of Rotary. These ideals are reflected in the Rotary Four-Way Test – an ethical guide that asks four questions:
- Is it the truth?
- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
What makes this award particularly special is that it is presented by Rotary International and is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and dedication.
“Dr Roux makes a difference in the community. He is selfless and embodies what it means to serve. He is a fantastic example,” added Van Niekerk, who has known Dr Roux for more than three decades.
Dr Roux is well known for his work as chairperson of the Potchefstroom Fire Protection Association, where he has provided expert knowledge on fire management at a national level. He is also the General Manager of the North West Umbrella Fire Protection Association. He also has extensive knowledge of disaster management and completed a doctoral degree in Psychology.

Dr Roux matriculated from Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom in 1983. Since then, he has served with distinction in various capacities and has received numerous honours across a range of fields.
What makes him stand out above his peers is his humility. A glance at his CV reveals a person who continually embraces new pursuits and challenges and succeeds with distinction.
A man who continues to serve his community – a true pillar of society.
