Dear editor, regarding your online article about Aardklop this week: I am not sure where the information came from, but I was very surprised to see your reporter talk about the ‘doodgewone mense’ that make up the ‘Feeskomitee’.
There is nothing ordinary about them. They innovated the move to save the festival, gave up their time and expertise at no cost and took on the responsibility of representing the community and fighting for the rights of Potchefstroom community members of their own free will. That is not what ‘doodgewone mense’ do.
Did you know that between them they have over 10 degrees? In this group are nationally successful businesspeople, a professor, an award-winning playwright, a published writer, an internationally recognised choirmaster…and over 140 years’ combined experience.
I, for one, am really tired of people who look at Potch locals as ‘lesser than’. We are not called ‘the City of Expertise’ for nothing. We are not talking about a ‘kerkbasaar’ here. This is a national Arts Festival.
The new CEO of Aardklop, Alexa Strachan, can be grateful that this powerful local team is committed to the Aardklop cause.
Please, please don’t refer to them as ‘doodgewoon’. They are anything but that.
In fact, it would be great if you could do an article on them so that everyone can get to see who is bringing local power to the festival. (We apologise if any of these people object to being called “doodgewone mense”. Ed.)
