Concerned resident writes:
I write this letter as a concerned resident who believes that the ongoing electricity outages and unstable power supply affecting communities across the JB Marks Local Municipality have reached a point where they can no longer be viewed as mere inconveniences.
They have become a serious threat to public safety and the well-being of our residents.
Behind every power outage is a human story.
Many households are home to elderly residents, people living with disabilities, and families who have no support system other than their neighbours and community members.
For these vulnerable residents, prolonged and repeated power interruptions create real risks to life and property.
A recent incident illustrates this concern. Following yet another electricity outage reportedly linked to illegal electricity connections, an elderly resident went to bed while the power was off. When electricity was unexpectedly restored, he was unaware that his stove had been left switched on. He later awoke to find his home filled with thick smoke.
Despite his physical challenges, he managed to open the door and call for help, allowing neighbours to assist him.
The outcome could easily have been tragic.
This incident is not an isolated concern. Every unexpected outage places residents at risk. Food spoils, security systems fail, medical equipment becomes unusable, students struggle to prepare for examinations, and businesses suffer financial losses.
Most importantly, lives are placed in danger.
Residents continue to pay rates and service charges with the expectation that basic municipal services will be delivered reliably and responsibly. Yet many feel that they are being exposed to unnecessary risks due to ongoing infrastructure failures and the apparent inability to effectively address illegal electricity connections that contribute to these disruptions.
The issue is not merely one of inconvenience; it is one of accountability and public safety.
Communities deserve transparent communication, decisive action, and visible leadership.
Residents want to know what is being done to prevent recurring outages, protect infrastructure, and ensure the safety of those who depend on a stable electricity supply.
Leadership is tested during times of crisis. It requires courage, accountability, compassion, and a willingness to act.
The people of Potchefstroom and the wider JB Marks municipal area deserve reassurance that their concerns are being heard and that meaningful steps are being taken to address this growing problem.
This is not about politics. It is about protecting residents, particularly the elderly, the vulnerable, and those who have no choice but to rely on municipal services for their daily safety and well-being.
Our community deserves better.
More importantly, the community deserves action.
