Two goals from NWU Pukke striker, Patrick Lebitsa, paved the way for a breathtaking 3-0 Varsity Football win for Pukke over NMMU at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds last night.
Thabang Matlhoko scored the third goal with two minutes remaining to put the cherry on the cake for the home team who are now in second place in the Varsity Football standings.
It was an absolutely joyful night for NWU Pukke’s players, supporters and coaching staff as the home side exhibited clinical and attacking football of the highest quality.
The crowd was put into a frenzy after Lebitsa opened the scoring early in the first half. It all started after NMMU keeper, Matthew Booysen, took too much time on the ball in his own half and eventually gave away possession to Kagiso Pitso who delivered an inch perfect pass for Lebitsa to put into the net.
Pukke dominated for the remainder of the first half with Tebogo Monyebodi and Kutlwano Nkwe stopping any NMMU attack dead in its tracks with a number of great defensive tackles.
The second half saw Pukke continuing in the same vein as the first half and could have doubled their lead but Pitso missed the golden opportunity.
This did not deter the lively winger as his brilliant passing and tireless running eventually earned him the man of the match award.
The Pitso – Lebitsa combination struck again after 65 minutes when Pitso provided a perfect ball for Lebitsa to score his second goal of the night.
The star striker was still not done yet as he turned from scorer to provider. He rounded the keeper and then unselfishly crossed the ball to Matlhoko who gleefully buried the ball into the empty net.
This created the loudest roar of the night from the crowd who had witnessed their team tear the Madibaz apart in the self proclaimed “Lions Den.”
Pukke has now created a winning reputation and have a golden opportunity to take first place if they beat the top of the log UWC on Monday in another home match.
“We must continue with this form that we showed tonight. I am proud of my boys. We expect a cracking match against UWC on Monday,” said NWU Pukke coach, Michael Seleka.
Seleka also thanked the thunderous support his team received on the night and admits that they team spirit is high in the squad.
“The players are really enjoying themselves and this positivity is what helps us to play winning attacking football,” he concluded after the match.
