It was always going to be an uphill battle for the University of Cape Town against the seasoned NWU Pukke team who were gunning for a bonus point win.
This proved true last night at the SANDF Kopanelo Hall as Pukke cruised to a 69-37 win with Sigi Burger putting a match winning performance in the shooter position. The team from Potchefstroom are now in fourth place with 17 points from 5 matches.
Pukke played with a different looking team as most of their players got their first Varsity Netball starts such as Marike Maree and Cara Potgieter who played brilliantly in tandem with Burger.
It was UCT who got the ball rolling in the first half as Tara Munro an Kelly Firth put the pressure on Pukke.

UCT soon doubled their lead as they took an early powerplay in the first quarter to lead 10-5 at one stage.
Pukke was though never flustered and made sure of keeping position in the middle of the field. They took a 16-12 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they extended the lead throughout the match. UCT played one of their better games in the tournament as they never gave up in spite trailing by double figures for the majority of the match.
Centres, Jomari Myburgh in the first quarter and Izanna Muller in the second half placed Pukke in a commanding position. Their distribution was first class and Marna Claassens and Burger did the rest to score great goals.
Pukke played better netball in the second half and kept scoring goals which took them past the 50 points mark to gain a valuable bonus point.
NWU Pukke coach, Dorette Badenhorst can be happy with the performance ahead of Wednesday’s crunch match with Maties in Port Elizabeth, where a sterner test is expected.
