Jomo Cosmos opened its NFD campaign with a 1-1 draw against FC Cape Town at Olën Park on Sunday, 28 August.
It was the first match of the season and Cosmos was intent on starting with a win. Ezenkosi has kept the core of the PSL squad with the side handing debuts to Okpara Junior, Mpho Rasilingwane and Thabo Ralebakeng.
Cosmos started off brightly with Mxolisi Macuphu forcing FC Cape Town’s Lebo Ngubeni to make early saves. Wiseman Maluleke was also proving to be a threat for the “African Beast” defence. The away side soaked up the pressure and grew into the tempo of the game as Ranga Chivaviro came close to scoring the first goal of the day.
Towards the stroke of halftime, FC Cape Town took the lead through Sekela Sithole who benefited from a lapse in concentration to hand the away side the lead.
Cosmos was a goal down and that sparked a reaction as Jomo Sono’s men put on a great counter-attack that resulted in Wiseman Maluleke lobbing over the keeper to bring Cosmos level. Neither team could convert their second-half chances with the game heading out for a draw. After the international break, Jomo Cosmos will travel to Thohoyandou Stadium to face the Black Leopards.
