The prince of South African football, Jomo Sono, recently received two honorary doctorates for his contribution to football – not only in South Africa but to the world in general. These titles, given to him by the University of London and Dubai University, are befitting of a man of his stature who is currently hell-bent on steering his beloved Jomo Cosmos team to the Premier Soccer League again.
Cosmos, which plays its home matches in Potchefstroom, has had an up-and-down first half in the National First Division but has been picking up momentum as of late. Dr Sono, himself, was delighted with his recent achievements that ended 2016 on a high note.
‘I don’t know who recommended me or anyone from London or Dubai Universities, but they did some research on me – stuff that I had forgotten. I was kicked out of football by crooks because I was fighting corruption. Sanity prevailed and I ended up being free. I am a football person, not a position person,’ said Sono in a recent interview.
‘To be honest, this is the greatest achievement to be recognised by the entire world. I am proud to represent South Africa with this award. To me, it is not about achievements or medals. The only time you know how good you were is when you go to heaven,’ he said.
