Every once in a while, a young athlete captures the imagination of the public and young Phemelo Monchusi of Promosa Primary is one of these inspiring sprinters who has the natural talent to reach the stars.
This lightning-fast boy has achieved most of his success without a coach, having trained himself from a young age. Last year, he achieved the fourth place in both 100 and 200 metres at the SA Athletics Championships in the u.12 age category. Now, under Thabo Molete’s coaching, he aims to break records and showcase his talent on the tracks around the country.
‘He really is something special and has boldness in him. His personal best times are 11:00 in the 100 metres and 26:53 in the 200 metres, which are both astonishing times for a Gr. 7 learner,’ says Molete.
‘The goal this year is to get under the 11-second mark in the 100 metre and into the 25-second range in the 200 metres,’ he adds.
Monchusi is currently also training with the former SA Commonwealth gold medallist, Shaun Bownes, to improve his speed on the track and get him ready for the district championships and SA championships this year.
Most of the time, Monchusi is just too quick for his competitors and is comfortably beating u.15 boys on the track. The key to his success is his lightning fast pace in the final 80 metres where he, much like Usain Bolt, starts to hit the afterburners leaving the other sprinters in his wake.
‘I just like running and I aim to become a professional sportsman one day,’ exclaims a shy Monchusi who does his talking on the track.
