1. It has been a bumper year for school sports
It has been a hectic year for school sports in Potchefstroom, from the SA Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in April to the numerous rugby, cricket, netball and hockey matches that filled the calendar.
With so much sport in Potch, it is only natural that a lot of talented local athletes also showed what they could do in their various sporting disciplines. One of these athletes was Cara du Preez, who represented South Africa in the 2000 m steeplechase event in Algeria in August and local cricketers like the Gimmies all-rounder, Marco Jansen who represented the North West Dragons as a matric learner.
There has also been a wealth of young sports stars who excelled in various national championships both individually or in team format outside of Potch. One example is Potchefstroom Gimnasium’s u.15A netball team that recently travelled to Singapore for an international netball tournament. As a city, Potchefstroom continues to produce some of the top talent in the country and this is a fantastic sign, especially with the university in line to benefit from these young talents at a tertiary level.
3. Swimmers excel at North West Championships
In the blazing sun, the top swimmers in the province from various age groups, once again showcased their mental and physical fortitude at the North West Swimming Championships at Potchefstroom Dam last weekend. It was quite a sight to see the poise, grace and fierce tenacity these fit athletes showed. In the end, the two local swimming clubs, NWU Swimming Club and Potchefstroom Swimming Club showed their mettle and claimed the top two spots overall, with Potchefstroom Swimming Club taking first place by a meagre 28 points.
