The rain had the final say in the 2019 USSA Cricket Tournament at Wits University in Johannesburg. The NWU and Maties game ended in a washout on Friday, 6 December.
The NWU had quite a promising tournament before the continuous rain halted their momentum in a wet Johannesburg.
The NWU picked up two easy victories against the Madibaz by seven wickets and UCT by 144 runs on the opening two days of the competition. With rain from Wednesday to Friday, however, no play was possible.
The NWU’s experienced pacer, Bantu Dandala, continued his excellent form this year, with 4/22 against the Madibaz.
The men from PE could only post 175 all out. Thanks to Lourén Steenkamp’s 91* (117), the NWU easily reached the victory target with seven wickets to spare.
The second match also saw the NWU stroll to a comfortable victory against UCT, after a commanding top-order batting performance. Half-centuries from Lourén Steenkamp, Lesego Senokwane, Louis van Schalkwyk and Ruan Haasbroek helped them to a commanding total of 294/5 in their 50 overs.
UCT struggled in their reply and could only muster a total of 150 as AJ Jacobs (2/21) and Lesego Senokwane (3/9) did most of the damage with the ball.
The NWU looked on course for an USSA-title bid, but the rain had the final say, flooding their hopes of trophy success.
