The first day of Cricket World Cup action has hit Potchefstroom today (Saturday, 18 January). Amidst the rain interruptions, overseas fans from New Zealand, Bangladesh, Japan and Zimbabwe gathered in few, but jubilant number to cheer on their respective nations.
Bangladesh easily overcame Zimbabwe by 9 wickets on the Duckworth/Lewis method at JB Marks Oval. Bangladesh’s batsmen made light work of Zimbabwe’s 137/6 in 28.2 overs, as they reached the target in the 12th over with Parvez Emon hitting an unbeaten 58.
In the other encounter today, New Zealand and Japan could only settle for a no result at the NWU Oval as rain intervened. New Zealand reached 195/2 in 28.2 overs with Ollie White hitting a 80 (81) and Rhys Mariu smashing a knock of 51 (54).
Tomorrow Scotland take on Pakistan at the JB Marks Oval at 10:00.
