Gina Pienaar is a steadfast player on the pitch and, in her number six jersey, is making waves on the field – much like her footballing hero, the French World Cup winner, Paul Pogba.

“My cousin inspired me and I started playing football in primary school. I made my debut for the NWU in 2018 and enjoy playing as a midfielder,” states Gina.

“At the moment, I think furthering my education through football is an achievement because, not only do I get to play the sport I love, but I also get to build myself. The best part of playing football is that it brings out the best in me. It gives me a priceless feeling,” says Gina with a big smile on her face.

To Gina, football is more than just a game – it is a lifestyle that you need to commit yourself to.

“Football is not just a game; it needs more than just being at the fields. If you chose to play football, play it with your heart; don’t play it because your friend is playing. You need to commit yourself to it. Taking part in football or sports as a young woman helps you stay away from a lot of negative choices,” states Gina.

She is motivated by knowing that each day is a new chance to make a difference.
