One of the young up-and-coming flankers in the NWU Varsity Cup group for 2021, KG Woodbridge, is looking forward to getting back on the field on Varsity Cup game day. The only problem for this third-year music student is that the tournament will only officially start in April this year.
In the meantime, he is doing all he can to be 100 per cent ready when he wears his journey for the NWU. KG was involved in last year’s Varsity Cup team until the season was cancelled due to Covid-19.
The Varsity Cup management group scheduled a meeting for the end of January to decide the way forward for the 2021 season. According to reports the Varsity Cup management will use a bio-bubble model for all players, staff and referees and will most likely take place at Tuks.
All the varsities will need to agree upon and follow these rules and regulations. According to reports, this is most likely to happen to start on 4 April this year. During these unpredictable times, the future is very unclear and that has come to mind for KG, who matriculated at Pretoria Boys High.
“Even though we are unsure of the way forward, just being part of this group, with the opportunity to represent your varsity at this high level, is enough to keep the team motivated. Everything will work out at the end of the day,” stated KG.
The teams’ physicality and fitness will be the X-factor at this tournament when it is all systems go again. Luckily enough, the NWU coaching staff have provided all the players with fitness, gym programmes and skill videos to keep their game up to standard. This is a great initiative from the coaching staff and shows why the NWU is one of the best rugby institutes in South Africa.
