Penalty kick sinks Leopards against the Valke

A penalty goal from the experienced Valke scrum-half, Anrich Richter in the dying minutes secured a nail-biting 36-34 win for the Valke

A penalty goal from the experienced Valke scrum-half, Anrich Richter in the dying minutes secured a nail-biting 36-34 win for the Valke against the Leopards in a Currie Cup first division clash on Friday, 2 July.

The Leopards who travelled to Brakpan for the encounter had to see their 34-26 lead and probable win taken away from them after putting in a solid effort throughout the 80 minutes in this see-saw affair. The Leopards at one stage lead 10-0 thanks to two tries from Eugene Hare, but the Valke fought back with Godfrey Ramaboea, Edwin Sass, Rodney Damons and Valentino Wellman scoring for the hosts.

The Valke’s Jacques Alberts also capped his 100th match with a win and was a constant menace in the line outs and loose play. The Leopards looked as though they controlled the match at one stage with a 34-26 lead before Welman with a try in the corner and Richter’s calculated boot took the win away from the Potchefstroomers.

Loosehead prop, Komape Moloto, number eight, André Fouché and hooker, Gustav du Rand also went over the try line for the Leopards. Fly-half, Danrich Visagie, slotted a penalty and three conversions.

The Leopards are currently second on the log with 11 points, with the Griffons in first place on 14 points.

The Leopards have a bye this weekend and will take on the Griffons at home on Saturday, 17 July. This promises to be a massive encounter in the battle for first position on the log.
