NW Dragons batting coach gets Proteas opportunity

“The relationships I get to build with the players is really special, to understand them as a person. Also to get to know the differences in each person and as a player and to being able to work with them.”

The current North West Dragons batting coach, Justin Sammons, has been called up into the Proteas management team as a batting consultant for the Sri Lanka tour.

The experienced and highly acclaimed Sammons has coached the Lions for 4 seasons as well as the Jozi stars in the MSL for 2 seasons.

He was also selected to help the Zimbabwean National team as batting consultant at a camp before their series against Bangladesh.

Sammons’ passion for cricket started when he played club cricket in Holland back in 2003 as an overseas player, he then started coaching youngsters around the country in Holland three years later in 2007 and that’s where his coaching journey began.

What do you enjoy the most of being a batting coach? “The relationships I get to build with the players is really special, to understand them as a person. Also to get to know the differences in each person and as a player and to being able to work with them.”

Your highlight of your career so far? “I would say this very moment being called up to the Proteas as a batting consultant to tour Sri Lanka. Prior to that was probably winning the 4 Day series with the Lions, which went down to the last 12 balls of the season.”

What does this call up mean to you? “Highly humbling experience, I never thought thought it would happen and truly humbled that I was considered for this role to go and tour. I am looking forward to getting to know the players and management staff. I’m also looking forward to the learnings I can take from the Sub Continent.”

Sammons will be looking to use his skill and knowledge gained from the Sri Lanka when he re-joins with the North-West Dragons as they kick off their Domestic season. The Dragons are in group C of the Provincial T20 Knockout competition consisting of the Eastern Storm, SA u.19 and the Hollywoodbets Dolphins.

The team from Potchefstroom will be kicking off their campaign on the 8th of October 2021, in Bloemfontein.
