The cream of the crop of South African athletics will ascend on Potchefstroom from 30 March – 1 April for the ASA Senior Track and Field Championships to battle it out at the NWU Kenneth McArthur Athletics Stadium.
A riveting and exciting athletics spectacle is expected with top SA athletes looking to take national victories in the build-up to the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August 2023.

Some notable names who will compete in Potch are Akani Simbine (100 metres), Zakithi Nene (400 metres) and Zeney van der Walt (400m hurdles) amongst other notable contenders.
Athletics Central North West (ACNW) will also have the added home ground advantage and a strong squad will have the opportunity to break ground at nationals.
Marga Cumming (hammer throw), Karmen Fouché (long jump), Joné Kruger (long jump), Jo-Ané van Dyk (javelin) and Tamzin Thomas (100 and 200 metres) are all top contenders for SA gold.

Alan Cumming (hammer throw), Johann Grobler (javelin), Elroy Gelant (10 000 and 5000 metres), Jerry Motsau (1500m), Benjamin Richardson (100m), and Valco van Wyk (pole vault) will also be looking for gold at the SA championships.
This is only a select few athletes and the chances are good that local athletes might well spring surprises with top results against the nation’s best.
ACNW president, Jean Verster, stated that athletic fans have a lot to look forward to this coming weekend.
“This is going to be a massive championship, especially with a World Championships and Olympic Games around the corner. ACNW hosted the SA Champs successfully in 2017 and this time we once again want to fill up the stadium. We are encouraging fans to come in their numbers to watch top senior athletics,” he added.
Verster also thanked the J.B. Marks Municipality and the NWU for their partnership with ACNW in making sure that the upcoming championships will be a highlight of the year.
“This year the championships are about three weeks earlier than usual, which should provide for top quality competition. It should be interesting to see which athletes have hit form at the right time heading into the major international competitions,” added Verster.
Entry for the SA Track and Field Championships is R 60 for adults and R 30 for students and children per day.
