Die Wilge claim Noordvaal title with emphatic win

In a thrilling display of determination, teamwork, and unwavering spirit, Die Wilge High School emerged victorious in the final of the 2023 Noordvaal Championships for Division 5A.

The historic match played in Heilbron on Saturday, 19 August, saw Die Wilge’s first rugby team beat Curro Secunda 38-10 in a battle that will forever be etched in the annals of school rugby history.

The boys from Die Wilge showcased their prowess on the field, facing physically imposing opponents with courage and heart.

The encounter kicked off with an explosive start, as Die Wilge’s captain, Kutlwano Sepako, scored a quick try within the opening 5 minutes. The forwards worked in synergy to force Sepako across the try line, setting the tone for an electrifying match. Bafana Mzamo, showing incredible strength and determination and broke through the defence to secure Die Wilge’s second try after 20 minutes.

Curro Secunda mounted a response just moments before halftime, narrowing the score to 12-5 in favour of Die Wilge. However, halftime proved to be a turning point, with Die Wilge returning to the field with renewed vigour.

The second half saw Kamogelo Liphafa, Die Wilge’s left wing, seize an opportunity created by flyhalf Boitumelo Mancentsa. Liphafa’s dazzling 50-meter run resulted in a the third try for the Potch boys.

As the game progressed, Die Wilge’s forwards displayed their dominance, enabling Kultwano Ncezo to breach the opponent’s defence for his first and his side’s fourth try.

Curro Secunda remained resilient, managing to score a well-executed try from a lineout, but Die Wilge continued to push forward with relentless tenacity. Bafana Mzamo’s memorable 60-meter try, weaving through numerous defenders, demonstrated his individual brilliance and nose for a gap. Kamogelo Johnson added to the spectacle by intercepting an opponent’s cross kick and sprinting 65 meters to seal another remarkable try.

Die WIlge’s victory was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team, guided by their coaches, mr. Pieter Meyer and mr. Jimmy De La Rose.

The captain, Kutlwano Sepako, was rightly named the man of the match for his exceptional leadership and contributions on the field. He proudly hoisted the trophy on behalf of the winning team, embodying the school motto: “No Guts, No Glory.”

Die Wilge High School expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Principal Mr. Attie Rudd, the school management team, and the hostel staff for their unwavering support. Special thanks is extended to Ivy for ensuring the team’s immaculate rugby attire for every match.
