Dragons fall at the final hurdle

Western Province set up the win through a match winning fifth wicket unbeaten stand of 199 between captain, Kyle Verreynne, and Mihlali Mpongwana

Western Province showed why they are the only unbeaten team in the CSA One Day Cup with a 107 run win in the final against the North West Dragons at Newlands on Saturday, 28 October.

Western Province set up the win through a match winning fifth wicket unbeaten stand of 199 between captain, Kyle Verreynne, and Mihlali Mpongwana, which pushed their score to 307/8.
Both Verreynne (111 off 103 balls) and Mpongwana (105 off 109 balls) scored centuries for the hosts.
Migael Pretorius (2/51) and Kerwin Mungroo (3/66) were the top bowlers for the Dragons.

In reply, the Dragons posted 200 all out, with captain Wihan Lubbe playing a lone hand of 70 (79).
The Dragons just could not string together enough partnerships as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Nandré Burger (1/29) and Beuran Hendricks (1/20) were economical at the start for WP and kept the Dragons under pressure.
Mpongwana (3/32) also delivered with the ball alongside Abdullah Bayoumy (3/24).

The Dragons will be disappointed at how the match panned out after earlier having WP at 41/3 in the first innings.

In the end the partnership between Verreynne and Mpongwana shifted the momentum of the match and gave Western Province the title.
