Potchefstroomers pedal to podiums at Ride Joburg 947

Ernie Roets (MTB) and Dana and Ryno Schutte (road race) achieved podiums during the annual Ride Joburg races.

The annual Joburg 947 Road and Mountain Bike races were a celebration of cycling excellence where the top riders in the country battled for glory.

The 50km MTB race took place on Sunday, 12 November with the Road Race taking place on Sunday, 19 November.

A couple of Potchefstromers achieved podium places in their respective categories. Ernie Roets took first place in the junior category of the MTB race in a time of 01:46:58. Roets was about three seconds ahead of Travis Rademan-Ludeke, who took the runner-up spot.

Wessel Botha won the senior section in a time of 01:42:01. The first Potchefstromer over the line in the senior category was Pieter du Toit who claimed sixth place in 01:47:55.

The father and son-duo, Dana and Ryno Schutte, also made Potch proud with podium finishes in the 947 Ride Joburg road race.

Dana took first in the Veteran 50-54 age group in a time of 02:33:05 in the 97km race. Ryno took second in the junior men’s category, crossing the line in 02:09:25. Matthew Symm took first place in 2:09:22 with Jose Kleinsmit in third (2:12:25).

Ryno Schutte took an excellent second place in the junior men’s category.

Besides the Potchefstroomers podium achievements, the race also saw numerous elite riders showing their talent.

Overall, Marc Pritzen claimed victory in the 2023 Ride Joburg Road Race in a time of 02:09:00. Luke Moir took second in 02:09:01, whilst 2022 champion, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg took third in 02:09:21.

The first lady across the line was Carla Oberholzer in 02:41:43. Maude le Roux took second in 02:42:25 and Joanna van de Winkel third in 02:42:25.
