Volkies star shines with Dream Team selection at NWU Sevens

Local rugby talent Anro Nel from Potch Volkies was named in the NWU Champion of Champions Sevens Dream Team after an exciting tournament.

The NWU Champion of champions sevens tournament concluded on Saterday evening, with Westville Boys High that lifted the trophy and a cash prize of R60 000.

The tournament brought together some of the best u.17 sevens team in the country to battle it out for the title of Champion of Champions. It was an all Durban affair in the finals with Northwood taking on Westville boys after Northwood beat Monument in the semi-final and Westville got passed favourites and defending champions, Grey College to reach the finals. Local teams such Gimmies and Volkies also participated in the tournament. These two rivals played each other to decide, 17th and 18th place, with Volkies getting the victory by 17-12. In another boon for local talent, Volkies star, Anro Nel was selected for the tournament’s dream.

According to Dr. Pieter van den Berg, the tournament organiser, it was good tournament that they want to see grow.

“We received many compliments, obviously there is always places where we can look to improve, but the dream is to grow the tournament to have 24 u.17 teams and 24 u.15 teams. With atleast 12 of the best schools in the country taking part,” he said.
