NWU swimmers rack up medals at Summer Games

The NWU swimmers performed brilliantly at the SA Games for Intellectually Impaired Learners, helping the North West team achieve gold.

Five swimmers from the NWU Junior Swimming Club delivered a host of medals as part of the North West team at the SASAII National Open Summer Games held in Mbombela from 23 – 27 March.

The North West team emerged as overall winners, outperforming all other provinces with a fantastic all-round effort.

The SASAII (South African Schools Athletics for Intellectually Impaired Learners) Games provides learners with intellectual disabilities and Down syndrome the opportunity to compete at elite level.

Lourette Seyffert won six gold, two silver and one bronze medal in her individual races. She backed that up with three gold, six silver and five bronze medals in relay events. She was also named the Top Female Swimmer after achieving the highest overall points.

Aubrey James also made a strong impact, winning seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals in relay events, along with three silver and one bronze individually.

Tiaan Keyser delivered one of the standout performances of the competition. He secured eight gold, three silver and one bronze in relays, while also adding six gold, one silver and one bronze in individual events.

Kutlwano Dlamini contributed six gold medals in relay events and added one silver and three bronze medals at an individual level. Aurelio Smith matched that relay success with six gold medals, while also earning one silver and three bronze medals in individual competition.
