Bond Street parking chaos continues unchecked

Illegal parking on Bond Street in Ferndale has persisted for years, with Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer warning that fines alone have failed.

Illegal parking on Bond Street in Ferndale, allegedly by Bolt drivers, has been an ongoing issue for years, according to Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer.

Koekemoer confirmed that a formal traffic assessment was conducted, as the road is also linked to a Johannesburg Roads Agency stormwater upgrade project that has been underway for close to a decade.

She said the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) fines drivers frequently, but this has not solved the problem. “They seem to brush off the fines,” she said.

Parking on traffic islands and sidewalks contravenes municipal by-laws and the National Road Traffic Act.

Koekemoer warned that cars blocking pavements force pedestrians into the road, creating safety risks. Businesses have installed bollards and barriers, but this has not stopped the behaviour.

She said JMPD lacks the resources to station officers there full-time and suggested clamping and towing should be considered.

Koekemoer added that she has contacted Bolt’s head office several times without a response. Questions were sent to Bolt for comment, but no reply was received by the time of publication.
