Local quad biker Brian Baragwanath concluded the Dakar 2016 on a high note by winning the last stage and achieving an overall third position on the podium in the quad bike category.
Spokesperson for Team Rhide South Africa, Janneke Scheepers on Monday said Baragwanath and the rest of the team were expected to arrive later the day.
Scheepers said in an overview of Dakar, Baragwanath’s team mate, Ted Barbier really outdid himself in his first Dakar attempt, finishing 21st overall.
Baragwanath achieved three podium victories on stages 2, 10 and 13. “Baragwanath got a rear flat tyre 120 km into stage 12. He had a spare front tyre, which he used on the rear and had to take it easy after changing the tyre, finishing the stage in sixth place. From Villa Carlos Paz to Rosario, stage 13, he started the race 5 minutes and 23 seconds behind the Russian, Sergei Karyakin. The two quad riders fought till the end for third place,” she said.
With just 23 quads left, stage 13 started in reverse general classification order. Baragwanath started the stage 16th and managed to win the stage with 7 minutes and 55 seconds ahead of Karyakin securing a third place overall.
Team Rhide SA is a proudly South African off-road racing team that was formed by Baragwanath in 2014. The team’s aim is to raise funds and awareness for the plight of rhino, elephant, lion and other wildlife in crisis. As a symbol of the race against time to protect South Africa’s wildlife against extinction, the team members compete in local and international sporting events, including Dakar each year.
