The Seeff Properties Road Race set the perfect trend for the year with almost 1 000 athletes pitching for the first race of 2016 on Saturday.
The seventh anniversary of the popular race was enhanced by the first ever 21,1 km race on the programme.
Results:
21,1 km
Women
Jane Mudau (1:34.12) won both the women’s open and masters’ category. Julie Pearce won the women’s veteran category and Felicity Robberts was the first grandmaster.
Men
Phuti Mohale (1:09.51) finished nearly two minutes before the runner-up, Emmanuel Ramohlale in the 21,1 km for men leaving the third place open for Pelly Lamola.
Charles Selowa, Israel Madibane and Phuti Mabodja claimed victory in the category for veterans, masters and grandmasters respectively.
10 km
Women:
Competition was tough with Elzabé Cronjé (44:19) taking first position in the open and veteran category respectively. Leandri Janse van Rensburg took second place in the open category followed by Khudani Ndou.
Carmen Schoeman and Alice Nkuna claimed first place in the master and grandmaster categories respectively while Daleen van Zyl was the first walker.
Men:
Ikumelani Thakalani finished the race in a time of 33:22 with Michael Morifi second and Munzhelele Dzulani third.
The first veteran home was Jabulani Balankulu and in the masters’ category David Khubujane. PB Nkuna claimed first prize as grandmaster while Jan Nkuna was the first walker to finish.
Polokwane Athletic Club (PAC) Chairperson Corrie Calitz said 960 athletes entered the race of which 230 took on the 21,1 km.
“We only received positive feedback from athletes and we are proud to announce that Seeff Properties has already indicated that the race will definitely be hosted in the same format next year. I would like to thank the sponsor, athletes and club members who made the event successful.”
