The 70 km men’s category of the annual Makhulu 5 Mountain Bike Challenge hosted at Mall of the North on Saturday was won by the talented 17-year-old Komborero Bere from Hoërskool Louis Trichardt.
Komborero also represents the Limpopo schools team. His resume confirms several wins in races across the province incluiding the Munnik Meerkat and mountain bike stage of the PPC Kremetart. He finished the Makhulu 5 in 2:03.07.
The second place in the 70 km race for men went to Heinro Malan and Gerhard Meyer was third. Liesl Lourens won the women’s category in 2:18.43 with Shirley Scriven and Roelien Britz second and third, respectively.
In the half marathon
(35 km) Kuno Venter (1:14.57) claimed first place and was joined on the podium by Sheldon Muller, second, and Jaco Logtenberg third. Ashley Lynne Murray (1:20.58) took no changes in letting anyone pass her on the challenging route. Annelize Mentz and Kea Smith were the second and third riders to finish in the 35 km women’s category.
For the less serious riders the Makhulu 5 also offered a 15 km fun ride with Reuben Middleton clocking in just under 40 minutes in the male category. He was followed by Joshua Baber and Reinhard Janse van Vuuren. Adriana Venter won the female category in a time of 46:01 with Aicha Mengouchi second and Lili Baber third.
Polokwane Pedellars Cycling Club Chairperson, Ronel Delport said this year saw more than double than previous years. “We are extremely happy that the event lured so many cyclists. We had almost 450 entries and can only say thank you to the sponsors and especially the cyclists of which some travelled far to be part of the challenging Makhulu 5,” she said.
She added that the Makhulu 5 will properly be hosted at the same venue next year and promises to be even more fun.
