The 2011 semi-finalist in the Nedbank Cup, Baroka Football Club will be hoping to make history in soccer circles when they face the in-form Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadiun in East London on Sunday during their Last 32 match of the Nedbank Cup.
The Ga-Mphahlele based outfit has never won any silverware since joining the professional ranks and this could be their time given their form in the National First Division (NFD).
The NFD log leaders will rely on their star players Thabiso Kutumela, Jacky Motshekgwa, Nokosinathi Ndlovu and their captain Olaleng Shaku to do business on the day.
Oupa Kgoadi, Team Manager said they are well prepared for the game and they want to proceed to the next round of the competition. “Winning is a habit, once you start winning you don’t want to stop. We have been doing well in the league and we want to continue with the same form. We are aware of Chippa’s form in their league but we are not scared of them. We have beaten on so many occasions when they were still in the NFD and I believe we can beat them again,” Kgoadi said.
He also mentioned that all players will be available for selection except goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke who suffered an injury against Highlands Park. “We only have one casualty in the team and that is our goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke. He was injured against Highlands Park last week but we have other goalkeepers in the team who are capable of filling his position and I believe they will do well. We want to excel in the tournament because this is the competition that put us on the soccer map in South Africa,” Kgoadi said.
Baroka rose to prominence in 2011 by reaching the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup while still playing in the Vodacom League, now the ABC Motsepe League. They made history that year by becoming the first team from the second division to reach the semi-final of the R7 million Cup.
