The President of the Limpopo Sport Confederation (LSC) Eric Muneri has heaped praise on all provincial athletes and teams in various sporting codes for making the province proud in different competitions in the last two years.
Speaking at the presentation of the LSC‘s report on the status of sport in the province, Muneri said they were happy with the considerable strides athletes and teams have made in various events.
He started by congratulating the senior softball men’s team for winning South African Softball Championship recently held in Polokwane. “Over the past years they always got silver and we are happy for their success and remarkable performance. We also want to congratulate the u.19 boys’ softball team that won silver at the national Softball Championship last year,” Muneri said.
The provincial senior women volleyball team that won the national volleyball championship last year was also congratulated. “The senior men’s volleyball team grabbed silver medals from the event and that makes us happy. We are also proud of the men’s beach volleyball team that won silver medals at the recent national championships in Port Elizabeth”.
Individual accolades went to Rynard de Lange, cricketer from Merensky High School for making it to the Cricket South Africa rural team. “His inclusion is a good indication of the work that we do in cricket being so influential to the national agenda.”
Junior high jumper Chris Moleya from Zebediela was praised for being chosen to participate in Poland in July at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Athletics. Moleya attained a height of 2.20 m at the recent South African Championships in Germiston.
Basketballers Lesiba Makinta, Vutomi Ntsako Bilankulu and Josias Malahlela who were included in the South African u.20 Basketball team in 2014 were cited as further examples of success attained by the mentorship and monitoring of the Limpopo Academy of Sport. As a body that regulates the overall governance and operations of sport in the province we are extremely happy,” Muneri said.
He also revealed that with Limpopo Academy of Sport, a ten member commission has decided to purchase a 22-seater bus, an LDV and a mobile athlete testing vehicle to conduct medical assessment for all the athletes earmarked for excellence participation in sport. “These will be purchased with the proceeds from the National Lottery Commission. We believe by no later than April, these athlete support aids will be in store. These are key pillars and fundamental to our mission of excellence as a province.”
