Kaizer Chiefs Football Club lies in third position on the log in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after they beat Baroka Football Club 2-1 in a thrilling encounter at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.
This was the Amakhosi’s first victory against Baroka who dominated their fixtures in the past seasons.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker, Leonardo Castro and former South African youth international Ryan Moon scored the winning goals for Chiefs while Lucky Nguzana converted for Baroka.
Their defeat puts Baroka in the seventh position with 25 points after 18 matches.
Chief Executive Officer of Baroka Football Club, Morgan Mammilla said they could have won the match but they did not make use of the chances they created. “Chiefs were not good but lucky on the day. We contained them in both halves of the match. We dominated, we created chances but we could not convert them. If luck is not on your side you will lose matches. We applaud the boys, they really put in a good fight and I think we will do better in the upcoming matches,” Mammilla said.
Their next encounter is against 10th placed Golden Arrows at Princes Magogo Stadium in Durban on Sunday.
In the first round of the League the two teams played to a 1-1 draw at the Peter Mobaka Stadium in October last year. “We have to win the match, it is a crucial fixture for us. We can’t afford to drop points again. We want to reach 30 points as soon as possible in order for us to secure the PSL status. There are tough fixtures ahead but I think we can do it,” Mammilla said.
He also informed that their uprising midfielder, Goodman Mosele will be out of the team after sustaining a knee injury against Kaizer Chiefs.
The former Baroka reserve team player was stretchered off the field in the second half after colliding with Chiefs midfielder, Willard Katsande. “He will be out for a while but we have players in his position and we wish him a speedy recovery,” added Mammilla.
