Limpopo was once again well presented at the annual Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town with several athletes finishing in satisfactory positions on the weekend.
Described as the world’s most beautiful marathon, the Two Oceans offers a 21,1 km half marathon and a 56 km ultra-marathon. Limpopo was presented by at least 37 athletes from local clubs Pietersburg Road Runners (PRR) and Polokwane Athletic Club (PAC).
The 76-year-old Marosi Mosehla from PAC finished first in the category for athletes 70 years and older in a time of 5:09.58 in the ultra-marathon. The club’s David Kubjana also performed well finishing 14th in a time of 4:28.55 in the category for athletes 50 to 59 years.
PRR athletes also did not disappoint with Timothy Munzhelele (3:20.47), Calvin Malatjie (3:23.11) and Lutendo Mapoto (3:25.59) claiming 15th, 18th and 24th overall positions in the 56 km respectively.
Former PRR athlete now running in KPMG colours Rufus Photo finished 16th overall in a time of 3:21.11.
Democratic Alliance Member of Parliament Solly Malatsi, who hails from Limpopo, ran the Two Oceans for the first time describing it as the toughest race he has ever done. “The toughest part is Chapmans Peak with its steep incline. All I had in mind was the finish line and when crossing it all the pain just disappeared because the relief was so great,” Malatsi said.
He has been running for four years and competitively for the last two to three years. “I used the Two Oceans as practise run for the Comrades Marathon in June. The Cape is beautiful and we had fantastic weather conditions. I managed to finish in a time of 6:32.00,” Malatsi said.
