The man of the hour

This budding young soccer player is one to watch

LIMPOPO – Great North Football Club’s current goalkeeper, Masethe Lloyd Morulane (22), is fast making a name for himself in the soccer fraternity as his team is campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League.

“I have three sisters and being the youngest and the only boy, I can say that I greatly appreciate both my parents and my sisters for their support and love,” he told BONUS.

His love for sport lead him to study sport management at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and his goals are to improve sport in the rural areas and the township as he believes it is something that not only improves one’s health and well-being, it teaches people core values.

Soccer initially only started out as a hobby for Masethe but it soon became clear that he was a natural in the sport when one looks at his accolades. He won the goalkeeper of the year award in 2015 at the Tlou Segolela Annual Festive Tournament and has represented the University Sport South Africa (USSA) at the 2014 Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games during which his team was crowned the runners-up after they lost to Botswana in the finals.

In 2014 and 2015 he represented Gauteng and USSA respectively at the South African Breweries (SAB) League u/21 Championship.

“I represented TUT in the Varsity Football Tournament in several games and participated in the Federation of Africa Sport University (FASU) games,” he added.

His interest in soccer materialised at a young age and he enjoyed playing street soccer. His friends encouraged him to try out for a local team which he joined as a striker and later as a goalkeeper.

“Soccer is a collective sporting code which needs a group of players working together towards achieving a goal. It teaches core values such as team work and good sportsmanship in victory and defeat all while developing strong leadership skills. It also encourages you to believe in yourself and your abilities, and if you don’t believe in yourself and your own abilities, no one will.”

It is through God’s grace, he said, that he is able to do what he does. His faith is what gives him the edge and drives him to excel at what he does.

In his free time Masethe spends as much time as possible with his friends and enjoys listening to deep house or soulful music.

“I’m an open-minded person who never repeat the same mistakes. My advice to other is to always follow your dream. No road to success is an easy one. You need to love what you do which is why I studies sport management as I love sport. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to be on top of your game,” Masethe concluded.
