Jessica dances her way to stardom

Showcasing exceptional technique at just 15-years-old, this young dancer was destined for stardom

POLOKWANE – There is no doubt that Jessica Dos Ramos Abreu is passionate about dance and she will take any opportunity that comes her way to prove it.

Jessica dancing at the age of five at Nonnie de Lange Dance Studio. At the age of eight she joined Jouney-Anne Steenkamp’s school, the Universe of Rhythm and Dance.

“I remember my first competition. It was in our old studio and I was very nervous. I recall that it was also fun and that I won every dance I participated in. I was happy and surprised at the same time.”

Jessica took part in the Arnold Classic Dance Sport Competition that took place on 6 May. She danced in the Latin, Energy and Classic divisions and received first place in all three divisions.

“I took part in the 13 – 18 years age group and enjoyed the experience. After that, on 7 May, I flew to Reunion Island where I took part in an International Dance competition. This was a new experience as the children against which we competed were from other countries. It was new and it was fun.”

She took part in the Junior Youth Championship against professional dancers where she obtained sixth place for Classic, fifth for Latin and seventh for Energy. She also qualified for the Advanced Championships where she was placed sixth in both Classic and Energy, and fifth in Latin.

“The best thing about dancing is the way it makes me feel. No one judges you while you dance and you can express how you feel. I enjoy the competition, especially when people compliment you on your dancing.”

She says the hardest thing about dancing is not to qualify for competitions when you have suffered an injury.

“I would like to thank my mother and brother for all the support they give me, as well as Erika Mengouchi from Mengouchi Haute Couture for dressing me so beautifully every time.”
