Mzansi Athletics Club celebrates five successful years
Mzansi Athletics Club celebrated their fifth birthday with their stakeholders, residents and runners at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on January 15.
POLOKWANE – To commemorate the day, the club arranged a special training and fun run with members and other enthusiasts in and around Polokwane as a gesture to thank them for their support over the years.
The club was founded by Richard Bilisi, who has encouraged a healthy lifestyle and staying fit since 2017 to bring about transformation in the athletic community, as well as to make running fashionable in the province.
According to Bilisi, the club is by far the most famous and fastest growing running club as they boast with more than 300 members at the end of 2021.
“We started with 25 members and we are pleased with the growth. We still want more athletes in the club,” he said.
He also shared some of the club’s success stories and plans for the future, and said they were able to motivate many people in the province to start running.
“The club has prepared novice runners to compete in the comrades since its inception. The club also has an annual official race, Muteo Mzansi Women’s Day race, which is meant to pay tribute to the women of Mzansi for the critical role they play in society. This year’s race is scheduled for August 9 in Polokwane.”
He told Polokwane Observer the club was able to keep their entire membership despite the lack of running activities during the course of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This is attributed to the culture of unity and camaraderie that stands out within the club and among members. This year, we look forward to the re-opening of official races and the Comrades Marathon.”
Those who want to join or partner with the club are encouraged to contact the secretary of the club, Bra-Max Maligana, on 082 809 0718.
