Rising soccer star breaks barriers

Flying Eagles player proves sports know no gender, sets sights on top clubs.

Kearabetswe Motsepe, a talented Grade 10 learner at Hoërskool Die Adelaar and a U15 player of Flying Eagles Academy, is making waves on the soccer field with her exceptional skills and is also proving that sports know no gender.

She started playing soccer at the age of eight with her brothers, and her father encouraged her to pursue it further since not many girls play the sport. With dedication and hard work, she’s developed into a formidable player capable of holding her own against boys.

She plays striker for her school’s women’s team and for the academy, where she plays against boys, showcasing her versatility and commitment to the sport.

“There’s no gender when we play, and I’m treated the same way as the boys,” she said, which is also her mantra.

She has played for the D12 soccer team, was also named the top scorer for 2024 and served as a deputy captain for the school’s team.

Kearabetswe’s ambitions are high as she aspires to play for Sundowns locally and dreams of representing top international clubs like Barcelona, Manchester City, or Chelsea.

“My role model is Kevin de Bruyne, the Manchester City midfielder. I admire his versatility, style of play, resilience, and achievements.

“He had a difficult upbringing, but didn’t let that stop him from fulfilling his goals, and that’s the message I’m advocating for,” she said.

She believes that there’s no barrier to achieving dreams and advises others to fulfil their passion and follow their aspirations.

“Follow your heart and do not let stereotypes determine who you are and what you want to be.”

Head coach of the academy Mpho Sekhoanyane said when Kearabetswe joined the academy, she was already developed and was no par with the boys.

“Her technical ability amazed us. Her ball control, passes, dribbles, and shooting are very good,” he said.
