Amanzimtoti detectives deliver results during Operation Shanela

AUGUST proved to be a highly successful month for police as Operation Shanela continued to clamp down on crime in KZN. Amanzimtoti police alone accounted for 23 arrests.

“Crimes included assault, domestic violence, house break-in, theft, armed robbery as well as malicious damage to property and fraud. Our detectives are confident they will be brought to book,” said Van der Spuy.

She said that a dozen convictions were secured for robbery, domestic violence, reckless and negligent driving and tampering with infrastructure. Convictions ranged from one to eight months’ direct imprisonment.

Van der Spuy appealed to community members to assist detectives with information that can lead to arrests, convictions and a safer community.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said, “Police appreciate the participation of community members in the fight against crime. The majority of the suspects arrested during Operation Shanela II, mostly for violent crimes such as murder, were identified by community members who tipped off police officers.”

Overall in KZN, over 13 500 suspects were arrested, 360 firearms and 13 542 rounds of ammunition were taken off the streets in August.
