Life for half-brother’s murder

AN Adams Mission woman, Nonhlanhla Zungu (21) was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Scottburgh Regional Court in September for the murder of her half-brother, Sandile Lucky Zungu.

The court also declared her unfit to possess a firearm.

“In October 2012, Nonhlanhla plied Sandile with liquor and lured him away from a tavern in Adams Mission, where they had been drinking. She requested a lift from someone who had also been drinking at the tavern. The driver informed them that he was headed to the South Coast and Nonhlanhla lied to him, saying they were also going that way. She and her brother alighted at Selborne and they continued on foot to the N2 freeway overhead bridge,” said Capt Thulani Zwane of the KZN police media centre.

“She misled him into believing they were at a bridge close to their home in Adams Mission. The woman grabbed her highly inebriated half-brother by the knees and toppled him over the bridge, causing him to crash down in the centre median. She hitch-hiked home and got a stranger to contact her mother and anonymously inform her that Sandile had been run over by a vehicle near Selborne.”

Initially, an inquest docket was registered to investigate Sandile’s death after his mangled body was found. However, investigations led detectives to believe Sandile had been murdered and the case docket was changed to murder.

“The case was assigned to Capt Zenzele Khumalo of the Scottburgh SAP detective service for investigation. Within days, Nonhlanhla was placed under arrest and brought before court. A pastor who had been conducting prayer services at the Zungu home following Sandile’s death, noticed Nonhlanhla was behaving oddly and he took her aside and spoke to her. She admitted her involvement in Sandile’s death. Armed with the pastor’s statement, Capt Khumalo unearthed evidence needed for a successful conviction.

During the trial it surfaced Nonhlanhla had telephonically taken out an insurance policy with death cover on Sandile and made herself the sole beneficiary.

The cover was for R1,9 million. There were four other policies with another insurance company and a further policy, with death cover of R1 million, with a third insurance company, however, these policies had lapsed due to the non-payment of premiums. She carried out her plot to kill Sandile to claim the RI,9 million insurance cover. She contacted the insurance company and informed them Sandile had been a passenger in a vehicle, which had been involved in an accident and he had died. They furnished her with the relevant claim forms, but she never had the opportunity to submit her claim, due to her arrest.”
