Lensman sees double
A Toti amateur bird photographer believes he may have taken the shot of a lifetime.
John Duurland, who has been birding for the last five years, captured a photograph of what he thought was just an ordinary yellow-billed kite.
“However, when I scrolled through my photographs, I noticed something odd about one particular photo. Unfortunately the picture is not the greatest, being almost out of reach of my 400mm lens, but there is enough detail to show the bird is unique.
There appears to be one set of wings, one pair of legs, but two heads sharing bodies joined somewhere in the middle. The tail is divided. One half veers to the left and the other half to the right.”
John took the photo on the Illovo Beach road, high up on the banks, overlooking the Illovo River.
“I often go there. I now have over 1,000 bird photos, but it’s the first time seeing something like this.”
John sent a copy of the photo to BirdLife South Africa and is awaiting a reply. Serious birders can contact him on 082-577-0210 or email johnduurland@gmail.com
