AGC golfers savour long weekend on the course

The women's section fourball alliance attracted a field of 80 players.

CASTING one’s mind back to days gone by, it is difficult to remember when last the weather was quite as good as it was for this last long weekend.

Many of Amanzimtoti Golf Club’s (AGC) members came close to pitching tents at the club, such was the amount of time spent on the course over the three days, with the Friday sundowner, Saturday’s regular competition, the schools day on Sunday, all topped off with the women’s fundraising day held on Monday.

The women’s section fourball alliance attracted a field of 80 players, and the scores proved without a doubt just how easy the course is playing, thanks to the run on the fairways.

The winning fourball, Prem Hiralall, Ram Ramall, Pat Mowbeth and Marcel Balarem came in with a round 100 points, followed by the team of Charmain and Rob Stone, partnered with another visitor Judith Paterson and their ghost Jacqui Porrill on a credible 99 points. Third place went to Brian Amm, Terry Boyce, Rob Symons and Gill Symons on 95 points. The four nearest the pins went to Lee Madsen, Lass Davis, Bruce Whiting and Jorgie Jorgensen. The men’s longest drive was won by Cuan Davis and Thanda Zama outdrove the rest of the women in the field to take their longest drive prize.

Many thanks to the players, sponsors and workers who helped make the day so enjoyable.

Last Wednesday the IPS competition was contested by 32 players, with Colin Scorer showing the rest of the field a clean pair of heels to take top spot on 39 points. The Friday nine hole sundowner bore the effects of long weekend malaise, with only 17 players competing. First place went to Vishnu Govender on 23 points, with Willem van Deventer in second on 22.

On Saturday 62 men played an individual stableford, and Patrick Cruickshank squeaked past Buff Berry by way of a count out on 40 points. Clarence Norris finished third on 39 by count out, followed by Billy Williamson. Nearest the pins on the fourth and 15th were S Govender and Fred Wallace, and Nic Brits won the jackpot.

The women played their 18 hole betterball Sherrard trophy on Saturday, and Wladzia Olivier and Jacqui Porrill (swivel) won on a fine 44 points. Second place went to Liz Donald and Jacqui Porrill on 42 points. The nearest the pin on the fourth was won by Gill Symons, and Sue Boucher had a two club on the 15th hole.

This coming weekend several women will be doing battle in the next round of the inter region competition. Good luck to Brenda Morgan, Jacqui Porrill, Liz Donald, Thanda Zama and Cheryl Flutter. Hopefully Pietermaritzburg will bless them with warm weather.

The pub renovations are almost complete, and the official re-opening is scheduled for this Saturday, 21 June. Go down and join the regulars in wetting the brand new bar.

AGC invites all visitors to the area to enjoy a round of golf on the stunning course. Contact the pro shop on 031-902-4144 to book a tee-off time.
