ABC’s Barbara and Doreen selected for senior masters
Belated birthday wishes for last week to Ken Leech, Greg McLeod, Ken Baker, Adrie Harmse, Wilma Richter and Heila Youens.
THE 45th annual women’s winter tournament at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC) was a great success and spectators were treated to some exciting bowls over two days.
Well done to Joyce Howard and team from Durban Collegians who took the trophy, winning all five of their games.
Runners-up were last year’s winners, Lynn McGlyn and her team from Wentworth. First Toti team home were Doreen Salmond, Marion Crouch, Jeanne Alexander and Adrienne Robbins in third place. The surprise of the tournament was the ever-smiling team of Vera Broskie, Amanda Ninow, Jacqui Fouché and Linda McGregor, who came fifth out of 18 teams with only one loss. Well done to all players. Final positions are all on the board.
The following skips and their teams won session prizes: First Barbara Beamson; second Rose Daniel; third Julie Sutherland; fourth Gladys Yelland; fifth J Cairns.
Thanks to main sponsors, Peter and Janetta Brown with their helpful staff, Paula, Patsy, Cornelia and Nicole, for donations of all the spot prizes as well as a gift for every player. Thanks also go to Alan Hawkins for the delicious milk tarts, Elsie Walker for the leg of lamb and Pam Chalder-Royle for the whisky. Bobby Stewart was the lucky recipient of both the lamb and the whisky, and Dave Gardner deservedly won the 100 board for all his help behind the bar. Many thanks also go to Hennie and Maureen van der Poel and Liz Morgan-Davies for the organisation, to Talla and Lesley and all staff in the kitchen.
Congratulations to Barbara Beamson and Doreen Salmond who have been selected for senior masters to be played in July. Well done to Amanda Ninow, Nicky Stirzaker and Jackie Holdrick who now have been given permanent places in PN Academy. Toti now has nine players in the academy out of 24 in total.
At TGIF Neil Oberholzer’s tab number came up in the attendance draw, well done. Next week’s prize will revert to R100.
There was a very tight game in the women’s novice singles, with Talla Stephens-Viviers pitting her skills against Lee Jordan. After 28 ends the game was on a knife edge with the girls on 20 points each, when Talla played the winning shot on the 29th end. In the men’s handicap singles, Andrew Walker had a good win against Greg McLeod; and Vince Phaal beat Neil Oberholzer. In the men’s senior singles, Peter Barnes overcame Neville Roscoe by one shot on the 24th end; Adie Fuller beat Alec Stirzaker; Ian Crouch defeated Coy Schrauwen; and Lofty van Tonder won over Dennis Hughes. Two games of mixed pairs were played, with Mike and Debbie Groom the victors over Jerry Gertzen and Talla Stephens-Viviers, and Doug Joubert and Elsie Walker beating Mickey Roche and Michelle Pitchers.
The winners in Big Chicks were Clive Frank, Alf Bingham, Shane Tocher and Di Robinson; and the runners-up were Clive Hambley, Duncan and Yvonne Wright and Meryl Hambley; in third place were Marion Crouch, Jeanne Alexander, Brian Crause and Adrienne Robbins; and fourth were Vince Phaal, Vince Marriot, Andrew Pearce and Gayle Windrim. The first session went to Dallas Davis, Noreen Butler, Dennis Hughes and Mickey Roche; second session was won by Les John, Doug Walton, Mardi Dovale and Ron Greenslade. Most bowls went to Greg McLeod, Doug and Lynn Joubert, and Mike Pitchers. The lucky 13th prize went to Heather Brown, Bobby Henderson, Les Brown and Joan van Rensburg. Neil Oberholzer won first prize on the 100 board draw, Dallas Davis won second prize.
On the morning of Sunday, 29 June the Picardy Bazooka Moths competition will take place, which will be drawn mixed fours. Save all your small change for the copper fines master. Cost is R20 and tea and sandwiches will be for sale as well as hamburgers after the game. All welcome, dress is mufti, so add your names to the list on the board.
Good bowling to all ABC players playing PN singles at the weekend.
Belated birthday wishes for last week to Ken Leech, Greg McLeod, Ken Baker, Adrie Harmse, Wilma Richter and Heila Youens; and happy birthday for the coming week to Sean Roberts, Pam Chalder-Royle, Lynn Audie and Alf Bingham. Get well to all members who are sick right now.
