UPDATE: Police arrest burglar on the run

He sustained bites to his hand and leg after being tackled by patrol dogs.

MDUDUZI Blessing Zama’s dreams of freedom were short-lived as the police net closed around him and he was re-arrested at about noon on Thursday, 20 August.

“Shortly before noon, vigilant members of the Scottburgh SAPS Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Amandawe, saw Zama at a premises in ward 4.
They immediately alerted the Scottburgh cluster detective task team and crime prevention unit. Members immediately galvanised into action and accompanied by colleagues from the Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team (TRT), Scottburgh SAPS, the Umzinto K9 unit and members of the CPF, they formed a human cordon around the premises,” said provincial police spokesman, Col Jay Naicker.

“It is alleged that Zama caught sight of them and attempted to make a break for it, but he underestimated the prowess of fleet-footed K9 unit members and patrol dogs. Within moments, they had him pinned to the ground despite him fighting back and struggling to break free and escape. Zama was promptly placed under arrest. He sustained dog bites to his hand and leg during his arrest.”

On 11 August, Zama was at the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court facing several charges of housebreaking. He allegedly misrepresented himself as another accused who had paid a fine for a drug-related offence and was released.

He now faces a further charge of escaping from lawful custody.
