SPCA raids animal hoarder

To date, 161 animals have been removed from the property.

A large number of animals had to be euthanased by Amanzimtoti SPCA after they were found living in appalling conditions on a smallholding in Crowder.

Amanzimtoti SPCA manager, Tracey Girling said investigations began on 19 August after they received a complaint in the Craigieburn area.

“My inspectors saw dogs, cats and pigs living in horrific, inhumane conditions and removed 19 animals,” she said. All these animals were in such terrible condition and were humanely euthanased.

“On a second visit, conditions had not changed and a further 14 animals were removed. On our third visit, the health inspector accompanied us and it was evident that nothing had been done to improve living conditions and a further seven animals were removed.

We then obtained a warrant to remove the rest of the animals from the property on Wednesday, 2 September, with the help of the Durban and Coast SPCA inspectors and veterinarian.”

To date, 161 animals have been removed from the property and the SPCA will open a case of cruelty in terms of the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962 against the property owner, a middle-aged woman.
