Ward councillor reports back

About four hectares of land on the corner of Uitsig Road and the R603 is being cleared by a private developer.

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge reports on municipal and other matters of public interest.

Starting in March, 50 metres of ageing sewer line infrastructure will be replaced from the Kingsway two pump station, located south of Subway Road in Warner Beach.

“The pipe will run from the pump station across Kingsway and then parallel with Kingsway Close,” said Cllr Beetge.

“The road crossing will be accommodated during the weekend to minimise traffic interruption and flow will be re-directed along Kingsway Close.

The project will take about three months and will not interrupt flow, as the new pipe will be installed alongside the existing one, with the cross-over accommodated during the early night when flow is at a minimum.”

Development on R603

About four hectares of land on the corner of Uitsig Road and the R603, zoned ‘light industrial and commercial park’, is being cleared by a private developer.

“There is no planning towards government-funded low cost or subsidised housing,” said Cllr Beetge.

“The adjacent shopping centre that serves the requirements of the ever-enlarging local community is also being submitted to extensive renovations that sets to further uplift the area.

This against the background of a joint venture between KZN provincial government, eThekwini Municipality and Toyota which will see a further 1,000 hectares being developed to accommodate, among others, a motor industrial park and other related industries.

This includes a new bridge to replace the ageing steel bridge across the Illovo River.”

Wastewater line repair at Doonside

Persistent wastewater seepage along Somerset Place between Doonside and Warner Beach eventually received the required attention when it was determined that not only had a pipe slightly shifted closer to the manhole alongside Somerset Place, but that debris removed during a recent blockage carried signs of a possible infrastructure failure higher in the line and possibly underneath the N2 highway. “At time of going to press, the shifted pipe had already been re-positioned and a camera commissioned to determine the condition of infrastructure of the section below the N2,” said Cllr Beetge.

Community-based planning

Community and civil society interest groups and organisations must note two weekends in March will be used by the city’s department Community Participation and Action Support to roll-out and workshop ward-specific, community-based planning for inclusion into the five-year Integrated Development Plan. Dates, venue and times will be published as soon as confirmation is received.
