Jameson Mbeko, who is wheelchair-bound, received the keys to a brand-new house, thanks to the Department of Transport and Human Settlements. The house, built on his property, was a life-changing gift that left him overwhelmed with gratitude.
Mbeko’s former home was an unsafe, deteriorating structure that no one should have had to live in. After an assessment of his living conditions, officials determined that he was a deserving candidate for the much-needed assistance. Siboniso Duma, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, personally handed over the keys to Mbeko’s new two-bedroom house — a fully furnished haven complete with groceries to get him started.
“I could never have dreamed of something like this. My old house was falling apart, and I was living in terrible conditions. To have such beautiful furniture and a proper home now—it’s beyond words. A huge thank you to everyone who made this happen, especially MEC Duma and Ward 98 councillor Arthur Mgobhozi,” said an overwhelmed Mbeko.
The spirit of giving did not stop there. MEC Duma said that this was just one of many heartwarming gestures as the department is working tirelessly to spread joy this festive season.
“We are on a mission to make Christmas special for many families across KZN. We are handing out title deeds, giving families homes, and restoring dignity. Our goal is to ensure that families here are on the same footing as others around the world,” said Duma.
