Zungu (84), led the school from 1985 to 2005. During his 20-year tenure, he transformed it from struggling to highly respected. When he first arrived, the school faced numerous challenges, including a severe shortage of classrooms.
“I built relationships with major companies like AECI, who helped construct classrooms, and Toyota South Africa, who supported the introduction of technical subjects,” said Zungu.
He credited his success to a strong partnership with the teachers and the school governing body. Zungu shared certificates of appreciation he received from the school, including some awarded after his retirement. In recognition of his contributions, the school’s Grade 12 class is named after him.
“I’m honoured to still interact with former colleagues,” he said.
Recently, the school has faced challenges, including a tragic incident on November 15, when a student was fatally stabbed on school property. The school currently lacks a principal after the most recent one was suspended by the Department of Education, a situation Zungu learned of only during this interview.
When asked about the key to his successful leadership, Zungu emphasised the importance of passion and faith.
“Loving what you do is the first step to being an effective leader. Trust in God and dedication to your work are essential,” he said.
Zungu also expressed gratitude to his wife for her unwavering support during his career, saying she never complained when he left home at 06:30 for 20 years despite school starting at 8:00.
In retirement, Zungu stays active by handling household chores and repairs at his Warner Beach home, a routine that he says keeps him energetic and youthful.
