When announced by the then mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, in 2023, the project was going to be undertaken in phases and was going to see the southbound stretch of the road between Pascoe Road in Isipingo and Pixley kaSeme Street in Durban resurfaced.

The M4 connects Durban to Amanzimtoti, Isipingo, the Prospecton industrial area, and Umlazi.
On June 13, a delegation from eThekwini Municipality, led by Themba Mvubu, an executive committee member and the chairperson of the city’s human settlements, engineering and transport authority committee, paid the project an oversight visit to assess progress.

In a statement, eThekwini said the delays were caused by bad weather and material shortages.
“The project is on track for completion by June 30. Two contractors are resurfacing the road in phases, with a total budget of R90m,” it said.

After talking to the contractors and conducting a walkabout, Mvubu expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work.
