Update: Search for missing man suspended for the day

Post-mortem examinations will be conducted to determine the cause of death, but at this stage, no foul play is suspected.

THE search for the remaining missing man in Amanzimtoti has been called off for the day as rescue teams conclude another intense day of operations along the river.

Metro Police Search and Rescue, who are leading the operation, will continue with further communication and decision-making regarding the next phase of the search.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, family members and friends remain gathered at the scene as hope and heartbreak hang heavily in the air.

“Multiple searches up and down the river have taken place throughout the day,” Jamieson said.

Amanzimtoti SAPS spokesperson Captain Charlene van der Spuy confirmed that the vehicle was recovered approximately 50 metres from the bridge and that the bodies of two men were located during the operation.

“Two inquest cases have been opened for further investigation, and the bodies were transferred to the Park Rynie State Mortuary,” Van der Spuy said. “Post-mortem examinations will be conducted to determine the cause of death, but at this stage, no foul play is suspected.”

Search operations are expected to resume pending further assessments by rescue authorities.
