Update: Rescue teams return to search for the last missing man in Amanzimtoti

Emergency services are continuing their efforts with authorities expected to provide further updates as the search progresses.

ALS Paramedics, the Metro Police Search and Rescue Unit, and SAPS have returned to the scene in Amanzimtoti to continue the search for the last missing man following a devastating storm that swept a vehicle off a low-level bridge.

The incident occurred at around midnight on Sunday, December 21, when a red Renault Triber was washed away by floodwaters during heavy storms that battered the area. Of the six occupants in the vehicle, three men managed to escape, while the remaining three were swept away in the raging water.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, search operations were suspended late on Monday afternoon, December 22, after two bodies were recovered along the river.

“The second body was recovered at around 14:30 yesterday afternoon,” Jamieson said.

“The driver, believed to be approximately 25-years-old, and a passenger believed to be in his 40s, were found downstream,” Jamieson said. “We are back on site today to continue the search for the last missing man.”
