Thousands arrested for drunk driving and speeding

The Department of Transport's MEC raised concerns over the increasing number of accidents involving trucks on the province’s roads.

SINCE August 2025, the KZN Department of Transport has arrested more than 4 400 motorists for drunk driving and speeding through its Nenzani La Ezweni operation, conducted at roadblocks in Amanzimtoti, Park Rynie and other parts of the province.

This was revealed by the department’s MEC, Siboniso Duma, recently, as he issued a stern warning to motorists flouting the rules of the road. He said blood test evidence was strengthening cases and contributing to convictions.

Duma praised the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and its law enforcement partners for their efficiency and professionalism in securing convictions against offenders. The arrests form part of intensified enforcement efforts under the Nenzani La Ezweni campaign across the province.

Meanwhile, Duma raised concerns about the increasing number of truck accidents on the province’s roads. He said he has instructed the newly appointed head of department, Zibusiso Dlamini, to strengthen the road safety plan, with a sharper focus on trucks. The directive follows a recent crash in Isipingo involving a truck and a taxi in which 11 passengers died.

“Our road networks, which are being constructed, rehabilitated and repaired, should not be playgrounds for irresponsible drivers,” said Duma.

The department said that between August 2025 and December 2025, there was a 5% decrease in road accidents due to the operation.
