Two dead in two days of deadly drive-by shootings in Malukazi

Two gruesome drive-by shootings within two days left two high-ranking Malukazi Taxi Association officials dead.

TWO people have died and three others have been wounded in Malukazi drive-by shootings within two days in suspected taxi-related violence.

Isipingo police communications officer Constable Donald Naidoo confirmed that the incidents occurred on September 28 and 29, and left two high-ranking Malukazi Taxi Association officials dead. Two cases of murder and one case of attempted murder are being investigated by Isipingo police.

September 28

Police responded to a drive-by shooting along the M35, Malukazi, opposite a Shell garage. It is alleged that at around 15:30, a man and his wife were gunned down while driving from Isipingo towards Nsimbini when four unknown assailants opened fire on the vehicle with high-calibre assault firearms.

The driver died after sustaining several shots all over his body while his wife was taken to a private hospital, where she is in a stable condition. The suspects used a silver Toyota Starlet.

Thirteen spent rifle cartridges were found on scene. The deceased was identified as the president of the Malukazi Taxi Association.

September 29

A shooting was reported at Bayajabula Close in Malukazi.

“It is alleged that at around 13:25, the victim went to a tavern when two unknown assailants followed him and opened fire,” said Naidoo.

The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and head and he was declared dead on scene by paramedics.

The forensics team examines the gruesome scene.

Naidoo explained that the vehicle the suspects used is unknown. He said that 14 spent cartridges of 9mm ammunition were found on the scene. The deceased was identified as the rank manager of the Malukazi Taxi Association.

Vispol commander, Lieutenant Colonel Derrick Cyril Cain, was on scene and commented that no one should be subjected to such a gruesome death.

He has instructed police to leave no stone unturned in this investigation.
